Our Midlands & West office is located in Hereford and can trace its roots back to the early 1970’s and one of the original rescue archaeology Excavation Commitees. Established as part of Headland in 2009 our new office is located within the site of a former WWII munitions factory, overlooked by an Iron Age hillfort.

THE CITY

Hereford is one of only five statutorily designated areas of archaeological importance in the country. It boasts continuous occupation from the 7th Century to present, much of which is deeply stratified. It has well preserved Saxon and Medieval defences with a superb medieval cathedral at its centre. The townscape and many of the surrounding towns and villages contain a plethora of timber-framed buildings set against the back-drop of the Black Mountains and their foothills.

SPORTS & CULTURE

The city is undergoing a massive regeneration, the completed first phase of this delivering multi-screen cinema and a pavement-café style precinct. Its core still possesses narrow streets dating back to the medieval period with timber framed pubs and good local beers and ciders. The river Wye is popular for canoeing and the surrounding hills and woodlands have endless potential for walking and camping with amazing view points from landmarks such as “Cat’s Back” and “Hay Bluff”. There are good sports and gym facilities in the city and other main county towns as well as a wide variety of outdoor pursuits clubs covering climbing, sub-aqua, triathlon etc… It also has a thriving nightlife with many late bars and clubs for those wanting to relax in a different way at the weekend.

ACCOMODATION & HOUSING

It is possible to get a room in the city from £285 per month. Price ranges are Double room: £340- £500 PCM; Single room: £285- £440 PCM (Most spareroom accommodation prices include all bills). Contract lengths range from 1 month minimum upwards. Most prices for houses and flats exclude bills with contract lengths from 6 months minimum. Flats: £325- £500 (1 Bedroom+); Houses: £400- £700+ (1 Bedroom- 3+ Bed properties). Many staff live either in or around Hereford or Ross-on-Wye.

If you are interested in buying the price you pay will depend on the quality of schools and the nature of the area.

TRANSPORT

Hereford is located on the main line between Newport (South Wales) and Manchester. Cardiff is about an hour’s journey away by train, Worcester about 45 minutes. There are also some direct trains to London. There are bus services running from local towns, although Leominster and Ledbury are both connected by rail to Hereford. A car is useful for exploring the wider countryside, the office is located about half an hour from the M50.

THE HEADLAND OFFICE

Our office is in Rotherwas, named after a former country house estate, and is housed in a modern office/warehouse complex. We have redesigned the interior to provide a mixture of office, meeting space and staff rest area alongside a finds and soil processing suite. We have good storage space and plentiful car parking. The city centre is about 10-15 minutes’ drive away or 10 minutes’ cycle ride.
