Salary: from £33,769.52 – £35,979.88 (depending on experience) + generous benefits package

Hours: Full time, 37.5h/week

Locations: Based in Headland Scotland (Edinburgh), Midlands & West (Hereford), South & East (Silsoe) or Yorkshire & North (Cleckheaton).

The Role

Headland Archaeology work on a wide range of exciting archaeological projects of all scales throughout the UK. The role of the survey team is to ensure the smooth flow of spatial data through the company from data capture to Archive. We build systems, promote skills, and provide resources to make this happen. The Senior Survey Officer will play an integral part in implementing and developing Headland’s survey strategy.

 

You will lead and support our highly skilled survey team and coordinate and communicate with the field team to deliver a consistently high quality of work for the company.

You would be working within the technical services team which has been developing and growing since 2021 and consists of the survey team, the GIS team and the data team. Its expansion has proved to be a vital success in Headland’s goals towards innovative and technological advances within archaeology.

 

You will be self-driven with a positive outlook and good understanding of British Archaeology. You will be experienced in site surveying in archaeology and capable of overseeing surveying across the company. You will be experienced in managing the performance and morale of specialist teams and will be encouraged to build and communicate the support and resources you require to meet your targets.

 

You will be supported to coordinate Headland’s surveying activities by the Technical Services Manager. This includes the development and application of procedures; training and support; fleet management and logistics; data security and processing; quality assurance and data presentation; sales and management support; research and promotion. You will be expected to support on site teams and provide hands-on site support where advanced recording techniques are required. There will be a mix of office and field-based work and you will be expected to manage your own schedule and activities. You must be willing to travel as required to fulfil the requirements of the role.

Key Responsibilities

Project Work

  • Ensuring survey data is secure, and regularly transferred between sites and offices
  • Ensuring survey data is processed, checked and made ready for its intended purpose
  • Overseeing the presentation of survey data to ensure they meet the requirements of the Contracting division
  • Carrying out specialist survey work
  • Carrying out routine survey work where necessary

 

Development and Support

  • Supporting sales and project management with contributions to tenders and guidance on survey issues
  • Research and development into new or alternate survey methods and processes
  • Development and application of surveying procedures
  • Development and delivery of survey training
  • Delivering survey technical support
  • Contributing to departmental KPIs and other long-term goals

 

People

  • Consultation with stakeholders
  • Developing survey skills and awareness across our contracting team
  • Promotion of Headland’s survey work as appropriate
  • Managing a team of specialist surveyors
  • Supporting the other activities of the department

 

Safety, Health, Environment and Quality

  • Responding quickly to survey data quality issues with feedback and other suitable measures
  • Follow and develop the Survey and GIS lifecycle

 

Equipment

  • Managing our survey equipment fleet, including hire equipment. This includes maintenance, scheduling and logistics

 

Essential Key Skills

  • Substantial GPS and total station surveying experience
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical survey issues and challenging working conditions
  • Survey data processing using appropriate software
  • Survey data presentation using GIS software
  • Advanced use of Microsoft Office packages, particularly Excel
  • Clear, friendly communication in person, phone, email or messaging
  • Full clean UK driving licence
