POST-EXCAVATION PROJECT MANAGER

Salary: from £37,576 to £45,128 (depending on experience and level of expertise) + generous benefits package

Hours: Full time, 37.5h/week

Locations: Silsoe (Beds), Edinburgh, Hereford or Cleckheaton (Leeds) (with opportunities for some home working)

Contract Type: permanent, subject to six-month probation

The Role

Due to the commencement of a large post-excavation project we are expanding the Research and Reporting Department. We are looking to appoint a self-driven, enthusiastic individual with experience of post-excavation project management within a commercial environment and an excellent understanding of British Archaeology. You will manage all stages of post-excavation work on a variety of projects at all scales including large   infrastructure projects. As a Post-excavation Project Manager you will coordinate specialist work, edit reports, propose further analysis and undertake high level academic research for projects as appropriate. The role will also involve supporting the Research and Reporting Department Manager in the coordination of work programs, department development, report sign-off/quality assurance and line management. You should also be able to sell our services to new clients and help develop existing commercial relationships. You will be a good team worker who can promote new ideas and new ways of working, and motivate your teams to deliver projects to programme and to budget.

 

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Managing the post-excavation stages of a number of concurrent projects, including full financial responsibility, client liaison and meeting deadlines.
  • Line managing post-excavation staff and managing the work of others on assigned projects.
  • Working with field teams and their managers to integrate fieldwork with Post-excavation tasks and deliverables
  • Contributing to reports, particularly academic content.
  • Developing Research, Heritage and/or Outreach strategies for projects as appropriate.
  • Providing quotations for all aspects of post-excavation work and undertaking tenders.
  • Editing, copy-editing and proofreading of grey literature and published reports.
  • Adhering to and promoting company procedures for post-excavation work as outlined within the current post-excavation guidelines and helping to create new company guidance and procedures in post-excavation work.
  • Undertaking other tasks appropriate to your skills and knowledge. This may include fieldwork project management.

 

You must have the following essential criteria:

  • Demonstrable/Extensive knowledge of post-excavation procedures and techniques
  • Demonstrable/Extensive knowledge of post-excavation project management
  • Excellent organisational abilities
  • Experience/understanding of project finances and reporting
  • Demonstrable publication record
  • Postgraduate level education in a relevant subject
  • Academic expertise in a particular period or other relevant specialism
  • Experience of archaeological fieldwork
  • Copy-editing and proofreading experience
  • Having a clear and concise writing style that can be applied across a range of reports
  • Strong IT skills, including GIS, databases and MS Office
  • CIfA membership at MCIfA level
  • Excellent communication and mentoring skills
  • Excellent initiative and strong decision-making skills
  • Full clean UK driving licence and willingness to drive company vehicles
