Dr Michael Wallace is a leading environmental archaeologist with extensive experience in both academic and UK commercial archaeology. He holds a PhD from the University of Sheffield, specialising in stable isotope analysis in archaeobotany. With over 20 academic publications, Michael also manages large and diverse specialist teams, including as the environmental lead on the A14 project - which at the time was the largest archaeological project in the world.

Joining Headland in 2020 as Environmental Manager, Michael has introduced several innovations in sampling strategies, processing coordination and team leadership. His role has since evolved into his current position, in which he continues to support the delivery of large infrastructure environmental archaeology programmes, manages standalone geoarchaeological field projects and leads on research and development initiatives.

Michael excels at translates his learnings from academia into commercial success, notably drawing on his expertise in big data approaches, as well as deploying novel techniques such as geometric morphometrics and stable isotope analysis. He regularly collaborates with academia and Historic England, he is a Member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists, and currently chairs the Association for Environmental Archaeology, which promotes the field and supports its practitioners worldwide.
