What we do
Developer-led archaeology is the major source of archaeological work and discoveries in the UK; uncovering important sites and finds that would otherwise remain hidden. As archaeologists we have the unique opportunity to be able to tell the stories of our human history – but these stories don’t just belong to us, they belong to everyone. One of the most meaningful ways we as archaeologists can engage the public in this heritage narrative is through engaging local communities in which we are working in the projects that have meaning to them.
Community engagement in archaeology is an important part of communicating archaeological results, enabling us to make this information more accessible to a wider audience.
Headland has an extensive and diverse portfolio of community archaeology projects that we have conducted for clients over the years. We strive to produce as much of the programme in-house as we can; from creating graphics and videos, to delivering talks and larger events. We have also previously run dedicated Facebook pages for some of our projects and can expand this to other social media and web-based platforms.
Community engagement programmes can encompass several different activities and approaches such as learning resources and visits for local schools, site open days and training workshops, information and interpretation displays, talks, lectures and popular publications right through to community archaeology excavation and survey projects. Our engagement team can create resources and learning opportunities that are accessible to everyone in engaging audience and age appropriate ways, to ensure that everyone can benefit from the valuable work we do and the archaeological discoveries we make.

What we can do
Our engagement team can create videos and digital resources to engage with the public about archaeology and heritage. The video below was created for Grim's Ditch for HS2. The public were able to submit their questions about the archaeological works and our team used these to create this video as a 'Virtual Open Day'.
