Geoarchaeology

Geoarchaeology applies earth science techniques to the study of archaeological sites and landscapes. It provides essential information about site formation processes, landscape development, and the burial environment of archaeological remains, which is fundamental to understanding the archaeological potential of a site and interpreting the results of fieldwork.

Our geoarchaeological services include borehole survey, test pitting, deposit modelling, soil micromorphology, sediment analysis and soil chemistry. We use these techniques to assess the depth and character of deposits across a development area, identify buried land surfaces and watercourses, and evaluate the potential for the preservation of archaeological remains.

We have extensive experience of geoarchaeological assessment in a wide range of geological and geomorphological settings, from deeply stratified urban deposits to alluvial floodplains, peatlands and coastal environments.
